We’re Homesteaders!

This post is just going to be a brief life update and will have a few unusual things I don’t typically post about here. Back in January I blogged about our upcoming change of lifestyle to homesteading while we were searching for a chunk of land and a home. I’m happy to report (if you didn’t already know) that we closed on our homestead in May and made our big move last month, and we’re praising God for His blessings! We purchased a 15-acre farm with an old farmhouse and a few outbuildings and have begun our homesteading journey. We sold our previous home at the end of last November and stayed with my mother-in-law for about 6 months while we searched. We landed about 4 hours north of where we previously were, and that has obviously come with a lot of its own changes. As you may have guessed from the feature image on this post, we named our new homestead GunSmoke Farmstead, since we’ll also be running our firearms training business from here. (Subscribe to the YouTube channel linked in the name for video updates on the homestead.)

Here are a few pictures of our homestead. (I don’t normally post pics of us – it’s weird!)

We’ve made a lot of changes in the few weeks we’ve been here and there’s still a lot of work to be done. We’ve acquired 31 chickens and 4 ducks in the last few months, so a coop was one of the first projects we needed to tackle. Eventually we’ll add more variety of livestock and pens. We put up a hoop greenhouse that was promptly knocked down by a storm… we’re still in the process of planning the permanent greenhouse that will go up in its place and I have no idea if it will be ready for planting this year yet. We started a large garden that has taken some hits and at the moment we’re not sure if we’ll yield much from it. We have some brainstorming to do, and we’ll probably need to do some replanting/reseeding. We’re also renovating parts of the house. We will be installing a woodstove in place of an old fuel oil tank for heating the house in the winter. We’re framing and rearranging the basement layout. And we already did a kitchen remodel. In the future we have plans for a guest cabin or two, another garage, a separate building that will be used as a classroom for our firearms training business, and solar panels for each of the structures (some happening sooner, some later). It’s a lot and it won’t happen all at once, but we have goals and plans in place!

I’ll occasionally post updates here as the urge to write about homesteading or homeschooling strikes me, but for the moment the best way to get updates on the homestead is to subscribe to the YouTube channel and find GunSmoke Farmstead on Facebook. I’ll also be posting some updates on our firearms training page soon: Disciple Defense Group. This page (TransformerGirl) will primarily remain a blog about my faith journey and theology.

If you’re in the US, have a happy and safe Independence Day! 🎇❤️🤍💙🎆

Blessings,
Robin
